Feeding Horses in New Zealand

Dr Erica Gee of Massey University has contributed a wonderful booklet on "Feeding Horses in New Zealand" that brings science-based information on nutrition to the entire New Zealand Equine Industry. This booklet is the fifteenth in a series of important topics for the horse industry commissioned by the NZ Equine Research Foundation. The Foundation hopes that all participants in the industry will find these booklets useful as educational and reference tools, raising the knowledge of all those owning and working with horses to the highest international standards.

Although equine nutrition is a fundamental and long-practiced topic, much of the science around feeding horses has only been developed over the last twenty years, with only a small amount of research done under New Zealand's unique pasture-based rearing and training systems. The NZ Equine Research Foundation hopes to commission more research in this area to better understand the influence of New Zealand's different pastures and how they interact with other feed sources used for horses.
