Jonathan Hope Equine Veterinary Scholarship

The Jonathan Hope Equine Veterinary Scholarship is a valuable opportunity for equine practitioners in New Zealand to enhance their practical skills and gain experience through travel, whether it be nationally or internationally.

The scholarship was introduced by the New Zealand Equine Research Foundation in 2016, and with the financial support of Dr Jonathan Hope, is worth $10,000 annually. It is named after Dr Jonathan Hope, who retired from Cambridge Veterinary Services Ltd. after a long and distinguished career of over 40 years. Dr Hope played a key role in developing the Cambridge Equine Hospital and providing veterinary services to prominent industry figures such as the late Sir Patrick Hogan at Cambridge Stud, the Taylor family at Trelawney Stud, and the late Ken and Ann Browne.

Dr Hope is a Past President of the New Zealand Equine Veterinary Association and long-term convener of the Scoping Panel for the NZ Bloodstock Sales at Karaka.

The scholarship is intended to support a New Zealand-based veterinarian who is young at heart and passionate about improving their skills and contributing to the local horse industry. Applicants are required to submit a detailed itinerary with confirmation from the practices they plan to visit, a current CV, a letter of application, and a budget that includes travel and accommodation costs.

The scholarship may be split at the discretion of the selection panel. Successful applicants are expected to write a report on their trip that can be published in the NZERF Bulletin. Dr Hope himself acknowledges the benefits he gained from visiting other practices, learning new skills, and making lifelong friends in the industry.

Please note that applications close annually on 31 January.
