Sam Fursdon represents New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing on the NZERF Board.
Sam Fursdon is General Manager - Welfare and Industry Capability at New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR), where she leads the organisation’s work across equine welfare and industry development. Her role brings together a focus on achieving the best possible outcomes for Thoroughbreds with supporting the education, training and capability of the people who contribute to New Zealand’s racing industry.
With more than 15 years’ experience across the New Zealand Thoroughbred racing and breeding sector, Sam has built strong relationships throughout the industry in various industry roles and led a number of significant initiatives during her time with NZTR. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Equine Studies, along with further qualifications in project management, and brings an evidence-based, practical and collaborative approach to her work.
Horses have been at the centre of Sam’s life for as long as she can remember, and she is passionate about ensuring they receive the highest standards of care throughout their lives. Most recently, she oversaw the development and launch of NZTR’s new Thoroughbred Welfare Strategy, Together for the Thoroughbred, which sets out a clear, whole-of-industry approach to welfare across every stage of a Thoroughbred’s life. Grounded in evidence and the Five Domains Model, the strategy strengthens NZTR’s focus on traceability, accountability, transparency and life after racing. Sam is equally committed to supporting the people who dedicate their careers to Thoroughbred’s, recognising that a skilled, knowledgeable and well-supported workforce is fundamental to the industry’s future.
