Strangles

"Strangles," written by Drs Andrea Britton and Tony Mogg, and reviewed by Dr John O'Flaherty, is the third edition of a comprehensive book on the most common bacterial disease among horses in New Zealand. The book discusses how to recognize, understand, and treat Strangles effectively. Recent research at the Animal Health Trust in the UK has shown that up to 25% of infected horses can become carriers, making eradication more challenging.

Unfortunately, some horse owners still feel stigmatized admitting their horses have Strangles, which hinders diagnosis and effective control of the spread of the disease. The book encourages all horse owners to adopt a voluntary code to follow in the event of an outbreak.

Pfizer NZ Ltd and the Foundation's generous financial support made the publication and distribution of the book throughout the NZ Horse Industry possible, and the NZ Equine Research Foundation is grateful for their support.
