Reproduction in the Mare

New Educational Resource: Reproduction in the Mare

The New Zealand Equine Research Foundation is proud to announce the release of its latest comprehensive educational booklet, Reproduction in the Mare, authored by Dr Babiche Heil.

This extensively detailed publication offers mare owners and breeders an invaluable reference guide covering all aspects of equine reproductive health and management. From basic anatomy through to advanced assisted reproductive techniques, the booklet provides practical, science-based information presented in an accessible format.

What's Inside

Dr Heil's work encompasses the complete reproductive journey, including detailed coverage of the mare's reproductive anatomy and physiology, the seasonal breeding cycle, pregnancy management from conception through foaling, and common reproductive challenges with their solutions. The booklet also explores modern breeding techniques, including live cover, artificial insemination with fresh, chilled and frozen semen, and advanced procedures such as embryo transfer and ICSI.

Particular attention is given to practical management strategies for different types of mares—maiden, barren, and foaling mares—as well as guidance on preparing mares for the breeding season and managing potential complications.
