Advances in Equine Podiatry
Launched at the 2025 Rodmor Equine Podiatry Roadshow, the “Advances in Equine Podiatry” booklet is a must for anyone interested in equine podiatry, farriers, veterinarians and horse owners will find this a useful resource.
“This booklet compiled from notes previously published in several editions of the ‘NZ Equine Veterinary Practitioner’ has been skillfully written by Dr Sarah Daly. Dr Daly has covered some excellent areas. She discusses the basis of a good hoof examination and focuses on the important targets for optimum hoof balance. The best geometry is discussed with reference to simple repeatable photography and also radiography.
Dr Daly has then included the analysis, diagnosis, and treatment of specific common issues affecting the modern equine athlete and has supported her discussions very thoroughly with great references and solid scientific evidence. This booklet is targeted as a guide for good progressive farriers and equine veterinarians to give a logical approach to improving our horses foot comfort, welfare and performance.”
More than 5000 years ago man started a new relationship with the horse. Up until that point the horse had only been a food source but out in the Eurasian Steppe a young adventurer managed to ride and tame an equine for the first time. This was the beginning of a revolution and greatly changed history thereafter. Not only did man’s range of movement change drastically the horse changed the relative advantage in war, agriculture and industry.
Since this partnership began, man has tried to improve his management of his new partner and through time this has always involved the hoof. As any horseman knows no matter what the job of his horse the health and quality of hoof care is often the limiting factor to the best welfare and performance outcome. In most societies, our relationship with the horse has become nearly completely for pleasure, companionship and competition.
The NZ Equine Research Foundation is most grateful to the Rodmor Charitable Trust for its support in producing this booklet.
The NZERF would like to thank both the New Zealand Equine Veterinary Association and Rodmor Charitable Trust for their support in getting this book published and available to all horse owners free of charge.
